Professor Hong began his academic journey at Xiamen University, where he studied zoology from 1978 to 1982. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the State University of New York in 1987 and completed postdoctoral research at the same institution. In 1989, he joined IMCB, where he currently leads as Executive Director.

As an internationally renowned cell biologist, Professor Hong has devoted his career to research in cell and molecular biology, with notable achievements in protein transport. He has published extensively as the first author and corresponding author in leading journals such as Nature, Science, Cancer Cell, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Biosciences Reports, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Membrane Biology, and is a member of the editorial board for influential journals like J. Biol. Chem. and Traffic. His accolades include Singapore's Highest Science Award and the National Day Award (President’s Certificate of Commendation) in 2023, for his pivotal role in combating and containing the SARS outbreak.
