Research Area

Human gut represents the largest immune system within the host. Through long-term co-evolution with the host, the gut microbiota has become an important "invisible organ" which is essential for the human body and acts as an important immune barrier. The functional genes of gut microbes and their corresponding primary/secondary metabolites have a profound impact on host biology, and are closely related to the occurrence and development of a variety of diseases. Also, gut microbiota significantly affects the metabolism of drugs. Our group develop genetic manipulation tools for gut microbiota to investigate the underlying molecular mechanism of the gut microbiome - metabolite/drug - host interactions. 1) Focusing on the gut bacteria-derived metabolites accumulated/depleted within patients with different diseases, our group will explore their impacts on host biology and diseases at the level of molecular mechanism, paving the way for better precision medicine against those diseases; 2) our group will characterize cryptic secondary metabolites produced by gut microbes, and study their effects on the host biology and diseases; 3) we will investigate drug metabolism by gut bacteria, shedding light on the development of new drugs.
