The School consists of four academic departments, Biology, Biochemistry & Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, and Agricultural Biotechnology, National Center of Diagnostics and Vaccine Development in Infectious Diseases, Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Cell Biology and Tumor Cell Engineering, and Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Coastal and Wetland Ecosystems. The School was founded in 1999 as an expansion of the former Department of Biology, which dates back to 1922. The school is recognized for its excellence in both teaching and scientific researches of biological sciences.

At present, there are 146 faculty and staff members, of which 108 are professors, associate professors and assistant professors/lecturers. The areas of research that are particularly prominent among the faculty members include: cellular signaling and mechanisms of tumorigenesis, immunology, vaccines and molecular diagnosis, molecular medicines and molecular targets, plant genetics with emphasis on shade tolerance and flowing time control, mangrove wetland ecology, pollution ecology and toxicology, parasitology, phycology, animal ecology and conservation biology, and others. Each year, the school admits about 150 undergraduate students, 150 M.Sc. students and 60 Ph.D. students.

The school houses many state-of-the-art facilities in teaching and research laboratories, such as mass spectrometry facilities for biomedical research (e.g. Bio-TOF Q, MALDI-TOP), scan and transmission electron microscopes for molecular biology and microbiological research, 600 MHz digital nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer for biomedicine research, stable isotope laboratory for ecological and environmental studies, etc. We have various facilities for experimental model organisms including the ones for mice and zebrafish. In addition, the zoologists and botanists in the school boast one of the best specimen collections in birds and plants of southern China.

We have established extensive collaborations with universities/research institutes at home and abroad, including those in USA, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Hungary, Japan, Singapore, and many other countries.
